Recognizing the current economic landscape, Coinbase notes substantial evidence of a slowdown in the U.S. economy. It believes the economy will peak in Q2 of 2024 and predicts the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates starting September 18.
The recent June CPI report, showing a monthly change of -0.1% and a yearly change of 3.0%, was below median forecasts, supporting a more dovish stance from the Fed.

Coinbase warns that rate cuts may not be bullish for markets if there are fears of a more significant downturn. Retail investors may be hesitant to take new positions in stocks or cryptocurrencies if the U.S. economy enters a recession. On the other hand, if the economy remains relatively strong and the Fed cuts rates, this could unlock more liquidity and attract retail participation. The upcoming November U.S. elections also present a possibility of fiscal expansion, potentially boosting Bitcoin as an alternative to traditional financial systems.
