The creator of the interoperability blockchain Polkadot (POINT) states that a use case for blockchains is crucial to their mass adoption.

In a new interview on macroguru Raoul Pal’s podcast, Polkadot creator Gavin Wood He says that personality test – or a mechanism that digitally verifies a person’s humanity – could be the killer blockchain application that sparks widespread adoption.

“What have I come to think about this [during] over the last couple of years is that so far blockchains have only really mastered the scale of value – basically money. They haven’t mastered the concept of personality, it’s something we rely on in everyday life for almost everything.

You go to a store to buy, I don’t know, a big piece of computer equipment [and] they make sure you are a person before you can spend more than $1,000. You don’t realize it, but it’s a necessary element of modern society, at least in the West.”

Wood goes on to point out how prevalent evidence of personhood is in Western society, but warns that we should not rely on governments to verify who is and who is not a person.

“We do it naturally, [we] expect to be able to see a face and many transactions rely on this. Much of our social fabric is based on [proof of personhood] that must be part of the blockchain before the blockchain becomes an important part of society…

The question is, how can you do that without relying on things like governments to tell you who is a person who isn’t? I’m not a big fan of the Worldcoin approach, I think it’s just too much faith in the Worldcoin apparatus. I’m not a big fan of the KYC (know your customer) passport approach, I think it relies too much on governments…

In general, I wouldn’t rely on any government stuff to power the blockchain and this has to stay at a pretty low level for it to be useful, so we need to find much more creative means of building personality into the blockchain. ”
