Hedge Fund Balyasny Adds Millennium Alumnus and Troubled Crypto Firm Executive
Balyasny was one of the quietest hedge funds when it comes to cryptocurrencies, but still seems to appreciate the talent in this field. The most recent hire of him not only has experience in major hedge funds such as Millenniumbut he was an executive at a major crypto fintech.

Samuel Donat joins Balyasny as head of corporate technology. He has spent the last seven months as an advisor to Steve Cohen’s Point72 fund and has been COO of bitcoin infrastructure firm NYDIG (New York Digital Investment Group) for nearly three years. NYDIG has recruited some impressive TradFi alumni including a Partner of Goldman Sachs in the past but, after firing 33% of the staff in the middle of FTX crisis, social media data suggests the company’s headcount has more than halved. Donat left about a year after the firing was announced.
In a previous pre-crypto life, Donat was COO of Stone Ridge Asset Management. He also served as Millennium’s global head of corporate technology from March 2013 to March 2018.
Not all NYDIG TradFi starts are back where they came from. Martin Miner, former senior vice president at DE Shaw, was global head of operations for three years; he got into cloud-based investment management fintech Enfusion last month as CEO.
