OpenAI expands AI capabilities through partnership with Oracle Cloud infrastructure
OpenAI announced a strategic partnership with Oracle and Microsoft to extend the Microsoft Azure AI platform to include Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). This collaboration aims to provide additional capacity for OpenAI’s AI initiatives, according to the Oracle official announcement.
Improving the capabilities of artificial intelligence
OpenAI, the organization behind the popular generative AI service ChatGPT, which boasts more than 100 million monthly users, will benefit from OCI’s advanced AI infrastructure. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, expressed excitement about the partnership, saying, “OCI will extend the Azure platform and enable OpenAI to continue to grow.”
OCI’s state-of-the-art infrastructure
Oracle’s Gen2 AI infrastructure is designed to support large-scale AI workloads, positioning itself as a competitive player in the AI space. Larry Ellison, President and CTO of Oracle, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, highlighting the growing demand for Oracle’s AI infrastructure. “Leaders like OpenAI choose OCI because it is the fastest and cheapest AI infrastructure in the world,” Ellison noted.
Wide industry adoption
OCI’s AI capabilities are already used by numerous AI innovators across various industries, including companies such as Adept, Modal, MosaicML, NVIDIA, Reka, Suno, Together AI, Twelve Labs, and xAI. These organizations leverage the OCI Supercluster for training and inferring next-generation AI models.
The OCI Supercluster supports Large Language Models (LLM) training and can scale up to 64,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs or Grace Blackwell GB200 Superchips, connected via ultra-low latency RDMA cluster networking, along with a selection of HPC storage options. These capabilities enable faster and more reliable model training, which is critical for applications in generative artificial intelligence, computer vision, natural language processing, and recommender systems.
Strategic implications
The partnership between OpenAI, Oracle and Microsoft highlights significant advances and collaborative efforts in the field of artificial intelligence. By integrating OCI’s capabilities with Microsoft Azure, OpenAI aims to advance its mission to scale and improve its AI services, potentially leading to more innovative AI applications and solutions in the future.
