Thieves steal $20,000 from a man trying to buy cryptocurrency at a Manhattan hotel
Police are searching for thieves who beat, tied up and stole $20,000 from a man who was trying to buy cryptocurrency in a hotel in Manhattan.
The 40-year-old victim said a friend arranged to exchange cash for cryptocurrencies Sonder Battery Park Hotel on Washington St. near Battery Place with an unknown buyer at 5 p.m. on April 27, according to police.
The broker met the victim in the hotel lobby before leading him to the third floor, where the fake cryptocurrency seller pushed him into a room and two more thieves were lurking, according to law enforcement.
The crooks punched the victim, bound his wrists and ankles, gagged him and snatched his money before robbing him, cops said.
Detectives are looking for three men aged 18 to 22 with black hair.
