Bitcoin 2024 is one of the most important cryptocurrency conferences.

And this year, it will be one not to be missed, as former President Donald Trump and a host of other high-profile speakers will flock to Nashville, Tennessee.

Cryptocurrencies will once again be in the national spotlight, as will the industry’s struggles with gender representation.

This was less than five years ago, when approximately 17% of the speakers listed were women.

Women are generally underrepresented in the technology and finance sectors.

And a recent one relationship from the Association of Women in Cryptocurrency, a nonprofit that supports women in the web3, highlights the gender disparity in the industry.

In late 2023, the organization surveyed nearly 400 women in the cryptocurrency industry and found that 82 percent of respondents believed the industry was not free from harassment.

“The lack of female speakers at cryptocurrency conferences is nothing new,” said Amanda Wick, founder of the Association of Women in Cryptocurrency. DL News.

She said that’s why her nonprofit has asked men to pledge not to speak on all-male panels. Bans on so-called “manels” are standard in finance and other industries.

“We need conferences, especially those without female speakers, to step up even if this industry is serious about seeing meaningful and impactful change,” she added.

Worse than consensus

DL News categorized every speaker publicly listed on the Bitcoin conference website as either male or female, based on the speakers’ names, profile photos, and the pronouns used in their bios.

For those who have pseudonymous names and images, DL News I looked at biographies, podcasts, and other media to rank the speaker.

While it’s not a perfect science (speakers may identify as nonbinary, for example), the count illustrates the gender disparity at the Bitcoin conference.

In 2019, of the 90 registered speakers, only 15 were women, about 17%.

In subsequent years, the percentage of female speakers decreased, settling between 13% and 16%.

In 2024, there will be more male speakers whose names begin with “A” or “B” than the total number of female speakers at the conference, according to a version of the conference website accessed July 24.

The share of women in the spotlight at the Bitcoin conference pales in comparison to Consensus, another major cryptocurrency conference.

Carroll is one of at least 26 women who have accused Trump of sexual harassment dating back to the 1970s.

Trump has denied the accusations.

Russell Brand is also expected to speak.

A former radio personality, comedian and actor from the UK, he has recently become a conspiracy theory podcast host.

Last year, Brand was questioned by London police relating to allegations of sexual assault and abuse following an investigation by Times.
