Vitalik Buterinco-founder of Ethereum, described the blockchain as a “lie detector” because it provides detailed information about message timestamps. Buterin’s declaration on social media platform X was inspired by a poster from another user who asked, “So what is a global universal blockchain?”
Buterin insists on improved truth-checking systems
In essence, Buterin made it clear that a blockchain presents information as it is input into the system without falsifying or allowing for manipulation of the input data. The Ethereum co-founder, however, hinted at the limitations of blockchains when he said that they were not created to fact-check a query.
“A blockchain is a ‘lie detector’… Doesn’t it tell you ‘the moon landing was real’?” Buterin wrote.
In particular, Buterin believes that a system should be developed that serves as a support structure for blockchains, capable of assisting in fact-checking, beyond simply storing input data.
According to him, the current organization of blockchains limits how much it can be attacked and serves as a strength. However, it is necessary to build “truth” models into the blockchain system.
Big vision for crypto ecosystem
Some technology experts are divided on Buterin’s sentiments.
While a group of these tech enthusiasts agree that blockchains are only capable of providing short-term temporal consensus and that more tools for truth-finding will be needed, and have highlighted the role that artificial intelligence and decentralized systems could play in the broader digital space, others believe that having a central platform for truth-finding is unnecessary.
The Ethereum co-founder is known to be vocal about his ideas on how to improve the broader crypto ecosystem. He recently said that forming political alliances based on those who are “pro-crypto” is not the best thing for the industry. This statement drew strong reactions from Charles Hoskinson, as reported by U.Today.
Lately, Buterin has been busy pushing for the adoption of new token standardsERC-3770 and ERC-7683, as it believes this will improve the user experience when it comes to payments on Layer-2 networks.
